Indian Students Surpass Chinese as the Largest Study Abroad Group in Germany
Germany is now the top choice for Indian students pursuing higher education. DAAD data shows 49,483 Indian students enrolled in the 2023-24 winter semester, a 15.1% increase from last year, surpassing China as the largest international student group.
In a statement issued by DAAD in early September, it was emphasized:
“The population of Indian students in Germany has surged twofold in the past five years. For the second year in a row, they represent the largest international student group in the country.”
The trend of Indian students choosing Germany for higher studies has seen consistent growth over recent years. Here’s a look at the increasing enrollment numbers:
- 2018-19: 20,810 students
- 2019-20: 25,149 students
- 2020-21: 28,905 students
- 2021-22: 34,134 students
- 2022-23: 42,997 students
- 2023-24 Winter Semester: 49,483 students
By comparison, the number of Chinese students in Germany stood at 39,137, followed by students from Syria (15,563), Austria (14,762), and Turkey (14,732).
What Are Indian Students Studying in Germany?
Germany’s Federal Statistical Office provides insights into the academic preferences of Indian students:
- 60% pursue Engineering
- 21% opt for Law, Management, and Social Sciences
- 13% enroll in Mathematics & Natural Sciences
- 5% choose other disciplines
Additionally, 56% of Indian students attend traditional universities, while 44% are enrolled in universities of applied sciences.
Why Are More Indian Students Choosing Germany?
Germany has become a preferred study-abroad destination for Indian students for several reasons:
- Affordable Education: Unlike many Western countries, Germany offers tuition-free or low-cost education at public universities.
- High-Quality Education: Germany is home to some of the world’s top-ranked universities offering globally recognized degrees.
- Post-Study Work Opportunities: International graduates can stay in Germany for up to 18 months to find a job, with opportunities for permanent residency.
- Robust Job Market: Germany’s thriving economy and demand for skilled professionals make it an attractive option for Indian graduates.
- Streamlined Visa Process: The student visa process is relatively straightforward, making it easier for Indian students to secure admission and migration.
Decline in Indian Student Enrollments in the UK and Canada
While Germany is seeing record-high numbers of Indian students, countries like the UK and Canada are experiencing a sharp decline due to stricter immigration policies:
- United Kingdom – There has been a 23% drop in Indian student enrollments up to June 2024. Stricter migration policies have raised concerns among UK universities, which heavily rely on international student tuition.
- Canada – Study permit approvals are projected to decline by nearly 50% in 2024 due to new government restrictions on international student intake. This has led to visa approvals returning to pre-2018 levels, making it difficult for Indian students to secure study permits.
These tightening policies have forced Indian students to reconsider their options, with Germany standing out as a top alternative.
What Other Study-Abroad Options Are Indian Students Exploring?
With the UK and Canada becoming less accessible, Indian students are exploring other countries for their higher education:
France – Over 10,000 Indian students are currently enrolled, with France aiming to attract 500,000 international students by 2027. Affordable tuition and a rich cultural experience make it an appealing destination.
Japan – Actively welcoming Indian students with easy visa processes and opportunities for skill development. In a recent interview, the Japanese Ambassador stated:
“For young Indians, studying and working in Japan is a great opportunity. Obtaining a visa is straightforward—simply present your student ID.”
With more countries expanding their international student programs, Indian students now have multiple pathways for quality education and global career opportunities.
